Federico Valverde put on a hat trick in the first half. A first half. Against Manchester City. At the Bernabéu.
Let that sink in for a second. Guardiola watched his team get dismantled 3-0 before halftime by a player who decided Tuesday night was the perfect time to have the game of his life. And now City have to come to the Etihad, in front of their own fans, and score three goals without reply against the most experienced knockout team in the history of this competition. Real Madrid have won 13 of their last 15 Champions League last-16 ties. Thirteen. These people treat the round of 16 like a warm-up lap.
Oh, and Haaland has scored four goals in his last 17 appearances. Four. The most expensive striker on the planet is currently going through a drought so severe that even City fans are quietly panicking.
But here is the thing about the Etihad on a European night. It has witnessed miracles before. And City average two goals per home Champions League game. And the head-to-head is 6-7, as tight as any rivalry in this competition. And Madrid are walking into Manchester missing Mbappe, Bellingham, Rodrygo, Mendy and potentially Militao.
Nobody is writing City's obituary just yet. But the numbers are not exactly whispering encouragement either.

What to Expect
Manchester City come into this knowing Guardiola owes his players a proper team selection after the tactical disaster in Madrid. Expect Foden back in from the start, Cherki and Doku given freedom to create, and Haaland leading the line desperate to end this drought on the biggest possible stage. The Etihad crowd will be absolutely deafening from the first whistle — this is a club that has been here before and knows what is required. But scoring three without reply against Real Madrid, even a patched-up Real Madrid, requires a level of sustained brilliance that City have not shown in weeks. The West Ham draw at the weekend was not the kind of form statement you want going into a comeback of this magnitude.
Real Madrid are missing half their first team and still arrive carrying a three-goal lead like a man who came to your house, ate all your food, and is now napping on your sofa. Courtois starts in goal behind an Alexander-Arnold and Garcia full-back pairing that will be tested by City's width. Valverde, Tchouameni and Camavinga form a midfield that is physically imposing and technically excellent — and Vinicius Jr on the left wing, even without Mbappe alongside him, is still one of the two or three most dangerous players in world football when he has space to run. One Real Madrid goal and the Etihad goes quiet. That is the cold reality sitting over this entire occasion.
Predicted Lineups
Manchester City (4-2-3-1) 🔵 Donnarumma; Nunes, Dias, Guehi, Ait-Nouri; Rodri, O'Reilly; Cherki, Bernardo, Doku; Haaland
Real Madrid (4-3-3) ⚪ Courtois; Alexander-Arnold, Huijsen, Rudiger, Garcia; Valverde, Tchouameni, Camavinga; Diaz, Guler, Vinicius Jr
Players to Watch
Erling Haaland — Four goals in 17 games. For any other striker that is a crisis. For Haaland it is a coiled spring. If anyone is going to produce a hat trick out of nowhere on a night this big, it is this man. The Etihad needs him to remember who he is and he needs this stage to remind himself.
Rayan Cherki — City's most creative player and the one most likely to find the moments of magic this comeback requires. Against a makeshift Madrid defence, his ability to drift into dangerous positions and pick the right pass could be the difference between a miracle and a very early exit.
Federico Valverde — Scored a first-half hat trick in the first leg and will walk into the Etihad as the most dangerous man on the pitch. He runs further than anyone, presses harder than anyone, and has now scored six Champions League goals this season. City must stop him early or the tie is over inside an hour.
Vinicius Jr — Without Mbappe and Bellingham, Vinicius carries Real Madrid's attacking threat almost alone. But almost alone and Vinicius Junior is still more dangerous than most teams at full strength. Nunes at right back has a night of misery ahead of him if City cannot get a press on early.
Prediction
💵 City to win: 1.54
💵 Madrid to win: 5.90
💵 Draw: 4.59
💵 Over 2.5 Goals: 1.48
Prediction: Manchester City 2-1 Real Madrid (Real Madrid advance 4-2 on aggregate)
The data pulls in two directions and you have to respect both sides of it. Every single one of the last four meetings between these clubs has gone over 2.5 goals. City average two per home Champions League game and they have a crowd that will demand a response from minute one. But Real Madrid have won 13 of their last 15 last-16 ties, are unbeaten in five of their last six meetings with City, and only need one goal to make this mathematically impossible. City will score — the Etihad at night in a must-win European game is one of the most dangerous environments in football. But Real Madrid will find their moment on the counter, Vinicius or Valverde will punish a City side chasing the game, and Los Blancos will stroll into the quarter-finals looking like they never even broke a sweat.
