Portugal vs Spain Prediction, Lineups, Betting Tips & Odds | World Cup 2026 Round of 16

Portugal needed ball sensors to reach this stage. Josko Gvardiol's stoppage-time equaliser for Croatia was ruled out only after the technology confirmed a touch from an offside Mario Pasalic, sparing Roberto Martinez's side extra time and ending Luka Modric's final World Cup. The 2-1 win also broke a 60-year wait, Portugal's first World Cup victory after trailing since 1966.

Spain's route was far cleaner. The European champions beat Austria 3-0 without facing a single shot on target, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring twice around a Pedro Porro header. That was their first World Cup knockout win since the 2010 final, and it extended a defensive record that now stands alongside Mexico's as the only ones without a goal conceded at this tournament.

The history favours Spain, who've lost just seven of 41 meetings with their neighbours. Portugal won the most recent one, though, beating La Roja on penalties in the 2024-25 Nations League final. Monday at AT&T Stadium is the standout tie of the round.

What to Expect

Spain under De la Fuente play vertical, high-tempo football rather than the old tiki-taka, stretching teams through Lamine Yamal and their wide forwards. Rodri and Pedri control the middle, and Oyarzabal arrives with 23 goal involvements from his last 16 starts for his country. Their defence, marshalled by Cubarsi and Laporte, has been the quiet foundation of the whole campaign.

Portugal's problem is the same one it's been for a decade: this exact round. Their World Cup runs in 2010 and 2018 died in the last 16, as did Euro 2020. Martinez won't drop Ronaldo despite his visible irritation at being substituted against Croatia, which means Goncalo Ramos, who averages a goal or assist every 37 minutes at World Cups, stays on the bench again.

Portugal's midfield of Vitinha and Joao Neves can match Spain technically, and Rafael Leao gives them the direct running Spain's high line dislikes. The doubt is whether they can survive sustained pressure. Croatia created plenty against them; Spain create more.

Predicted Lineups

Portugal (4-3-3) 🇵🇹

Costa; Cancelo, Dias, Veiga, Mendes; Vitinha, Neves; Neto, Fernandes, Leao; Ronaldo

Spain (4-3-3) 🇪🇸

Simon; Porro, Cubarsi, Laporte, Cucurella; Rodri, Pedri; Yamal, Olmo, Baena; Oyarzabal

Players to Watch

Lamine Yamal: Spain's most dangerous attacker and the man Nuno Mendes must handle for 90 minutes. Their duel in the Nations League final was one of the games within the game, and it decides how much Spain create from the right. He's back to full sharpness after managed training loads this week.

Mikel Oyarzabal: Twenty-three goal involvements in his last 16 starts for Spain, including both goals against Austria. He scored the winner in the Euro 2024 final and keeps producing in knockout football. Portugal's centre backs can't give him space in the box.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Finally scored his first World Cup knockout goal against Croatia at 41, then fumed at being taken off. He starts again, and against the country he's faced more than any other, the motivation writes itself. His penalty-box instinct remains Portugal's most reliable route to a goal.

Vitinha: The midfield battle decides this tie, and Vitinha is Portugal's answer to Rodri. His press resistance and tempo control kept PSG's Champions League run alive all season. If he gives Portugal parity in possession, the game opens up for Leao and Ronaldo.

Prediction

Prediction: Both Teams to score @ 1.69

Spain haven't conceded all tournament, didn't allow a shot on target in the last 32, and carry the better balance across every line. Portugal's last-16 record is poor, their win over Croatia relied on fine margins, and Ronaldo's presence limits Martinez's tactical flexibility against a side that presses in waves. The value sits with Spain settling it inside 90 minutes rather than needing the extra half hour.

Portugal's penalty win in the Nations League final shows they can frustrate this Spain side, and Leao on the counter is a genuine threat. It should be close, but Spain's defensive record is no accident. La Roja advance.
