Nigeria vs Zimbabwe Prediction, Lineups, Betting Tips & Odds | Unity Cup 2026

Nigeria are defending champions of a tournament that nobody outside of London quite keeps track of, and they have shown up to The Valley without Osimhen, Lookman or Chukwueze. Zimbabwe have shown up excited, according to Marshall Munetsi, who told his national federation's website that the whole squad is "looking forward" to facing Nigeria. That is either genuine excitement or the most polite way of describing a David and Goliath situation anyone has ever put into words.

The Super Eagles have not had a smooth run of things lately. They lost to Morocco on penalties at AFCON, settled for third place, failed to qualify for the World Cup after losing to DR Congo on penalties in the playoff final, and are now using this friendly tournament to rebuild confidence and give some younger names a platform. The last three meetings between these sides have all ended 1-1, which is one of those head-to-head statistics that suggests Zimbabwe are quite comfortable making Nigeria uncomfortable. But seven of Nigeria's last eight friendlies have seen both teams score in open, attacking contests, and they have scored ten goals in six matches in 2026. With a semi-final place and the defending trophy on the line, Chelle's side will not be conserving energy.

What to Expect

Nigeria are stronger on paper but are working with a rotated, youth-heavy squad that is still finding its shape. Ndidi captains the midfield and gives them experience and structure. Terem Moffi leads the line in Osimhen's absence and has been building his reputation at Nice and Porto. Moses Simon provides directness from wide areas. Chelle will want a clinical, professional performance that sends a message before the June friendlies against Poland and Portugal. The tempo of this game depends heavily on how comfortable Nigeria feel early on. If they score first, Zimbabwe will have a very long evening. If Zimbabwe stay compact and make it uncomfortable in the opening stages, those three consecutive 1-1 draws become relevant conversation very quickly.

Zimbabwe arrive without Kadewere injured and without Lunga and Antonio who withdrew from the squad. Munetsi and Nakamba in midfield give them genuine quality and experience at club level. Nakamba plays his football at Luton. Munetsi has been a reliable performer for Reims for several seasons. They are not here just to make up the numbers, even if the gap in resources between these two nations is obvious. Tembo will set up compactly, look to hit Nigeria on the transition, and lean on the recent head-to-head trend that has seen them hold the Super Eagles three times in a row. Marvelous Nakamba, and his name is genuinely Marvelous, will be the man Zimbabwe need to step up and control the tempo.

Predicted Lineups

Nigeria (4-2-3-1) 🟢 Uzoho; Onyemaechi, Fernandez, Ogbu, Oputa; Ndidi, Al Hassan, Onyedika, Simon; Moffi, Adams

Zimbabwe (4-4-2) 🟡🔴⚫ Chipezeze; Fusire, Takwara, Garananga, Zemura; Munetsi, Nakamba; Chirewa, Maswanhise, Msendami; Dube

Players to Watch

Terem Moffi — Leading the line in Osimhen's absence and carrying significant responsibility. He has quality and pace but needs service to be effective. If Simon and Onyedika can find him in behind Zimbabwe's defensive line consistently, Moffi wins this game for Nigeria inside 60 minutes.

Moses Simon — Nigeria's most experienced attacker in this squad and the one player capable of creating something from nothing. His direct running and ability to win fouls in dangerous areas makes him a constant nuisance for any defence.

Marshall Munetsi — Zimbabwe's midfield leader and the player Tembo trusts to set the tempo and protect the backline. If Munetsi wins his individual battles against Ndidi and Onyedika, Zimbabwe stay in this game long enough to make it interesting.

Marvelous Nakamba — The captain with the greatest name in international football today. His positioning and ability to disrupt Nigeria's rhythm in central areas will be crucial to Zimbabwe's chances of reaching the final. One moment of quality from a set piece and suddenly those three consecutive 1-1 draws feel very relevant.

Prediction

Prediction: Nigeria to win and both teams to score

Nigeria are the stronger side and should progress to the final. But seven of their last eight friendlies have produced goals at both ends, and Zimbabwe have been scoring regularly and are not here to be passive. Munetsi and Nakamba will give Nigeria's midfield problems. Nigeria's extra quality in the final third should tell eventually, but Zimbabwe will find the net at least once. Nigeria win, both teams score, and Chelle gets the result he needs while handing some valuable minutes to the next generation of Super Eagles.
