They have done this before — and it went all the way to penalties.
Lille and Aston Villa met in the Conference League quarter-finals in April 2024, drew 3-3 over two legs, and Villa eventually went through on spot kicks. Now they are back, this time in the Europa League last 16, and both clubs know exactly what the other is capable of.
Villa arrive carrying baggage though. Four defeats in their last seven games, a 4-1 hammering at home to Chelsea last week, and key players missing. The Europa League has become more than just a trophy hunt — it is their best realistic route back into the Champions League. Unai Emery has never been knocked out in the last 16 in seven previous Europa League campaigns. He is not about to start now if he can help it.
Lille at home, however, are not the same team they are on the road. Two wins from their last eight home games in all competitions is a worrying number — but in the Europa League specifically, they have been different at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, and Olivier Giroud at 39 years old is still finding the net in Europe when it matters.

What to Expect
Lille will be organised, physical and dangerous from set pieces. Genesio sets his team up to be hard to break down and with Giroud leading the line — a man who has won this competition before and knows exactly how to perform on these big European nights — they have a focal point who can cause Villa's defence real problems in the air. Bouaddi and Andre will try to control the midfield and Haraldsson on the wing gives them pace on the counter. At home in the Europa League this season they have scored at least twice in every victory — but they have also lost twice, and against English sides their record is poor. Three wins from nineteen attempts is a damning number.
Aston Villa travel in poor domestic form but their European identity under Emery is completely different. Five consecutive Europa League wins, barely conceding, and a manager who treats this competition like his personal territory. Watkins leads the line with Morgan Rogers behind him, while Sancho could be recalled to add directness on the right. Douglas Luiz and Onana will be crucial in the midfield battle — if Villa win that area of the pitch, they control the game. The concern is the mounting injury list and a team that has looked vulnerable defensively in recent weeks.
Predicted Lineups
Lille (4-3-3) 🔴🐕 Ozer; Santos, Ngoy, Mandi, Perraud; Bentaleb, Andre, Bouaddi; Haraldsson, Giroud, Correia
Aston Villa (4-2-3-1) 🟣 Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Maatsen; Luiz, Onana; Sancho, Rogers, Buendia; Watkins
Players and Matchups to Watch
Olivier Giroud — Thirty-nine years old and still delivering in Europe. Four Europa League goals this season and a Champions League and Europa League winner. He knows how to perform on nights like this and Villa cannot afford to give him a free header.
Ayyoub Bouaddi — The young Lille midfielder is one booking away from suspension but he is their engine in the middle of the park. If he gets forward and connects the play between midfield and Giroud, Lille become a very different prospect.
Ollie Watkins — Coming into this game short of goals and confidence after a difficult few weeks domestically. But Watkins has consistently shown he raises his game in Europe. One early goal and everything changes for Villa.
Morgan Rogers — Five games without a goal and under pressure to deliver in the biggest game of Villa's season so far. Rogers has the quality to unlock a Lille defence that has been inconsistent at home — he just needs to find that final product again.

💵 Lille to win: 3.01
💵 Liverpool to win: 2.48
💵 Draw: 4.59
💵 Over 2.5 Goals: 1.54
💵 Both Teams to Score (GG): 1.54
The data pulls clearly in Villa's direction. Five consecutive Europa League wins, conceding less than a goal per game in the competition, and a manager who has never been eliminated at this stage. Lille's last three Europa League games all went under 2.5 goals and their record against English clubs across nineteen meetings is deeply poor. Villa are not in great domestic form but Emery's teams shift gears in Europe — and a tight, disciplined away win with a clean sheet is exactly the kind of result he specialises in at this stage of the competition. One goal should be enough to take back to Villa Park.
Prediction: Lille 0–1 Aston Villa
