Twenty years. That is how long Arsenal have been waiting for a Champions League final.
Tuesday evening at the Emirates. 60,000 people who have watched this club chase this moment through heartbreak after heartbreak. A 1-1 draw from the first leg that leaves the tie perfectly poised, a second penalty controversy that left Arteta furious at the full time whistle in Madrid, and now the chance to finish the job on home soil.
Arsenal are six points clear at the top of the Premier League, unbeaten in thirteen Champions League games this season, and have won five of their six home games in the competition. They have won seven consecutive Champions League matches against La Liga sides. And just six months ago, they put four goals past this exact Atletico Madrid team without reply in the league phase. The form, the venue, the history — it all points towards Arsenal.
But Atletico Madrid under Diego Simeone do not care about any of that. They have beaten every English club they have faced in European semi-finals. They won at Barcelona in the quarter-finals. And they finished the first leg the stronger side, with Simeone's tactical adjustments in the second half giving Arsenal serious problems they were unable to solve. One moment of Atleti quality on the counter and everything at the Emirates gets very anxious very quickly.
The 20-year wait ends or continues on Tuesday. There is no middle ground.

What to Expect
Arsenal come into this on the back of a 3-0 win over Fulham where Saka played a goal and assist in the first half before being withdrawn as a precaution. He is fit for Tuesday and his return to the starting lineup is arguably the most important team news for Arsenal. Odegaard and Havertz are both working against the clock to be fit, with the Norwegian the more likely of the two to start. Zubimendi anchors the midfield alongside Rice and that is the foundation Arteta builds everything on. Gyokeres leads the line after his penalty in Madrid and is the most direct physical threat Atletico have had to deal with all season. Arsenal will control possession, use the width of the pitch through Saka and the left side, and look for early goals to calm the Emirates crowd. But they need to be clinical when the chances arrive because Atletico will make them pay for every missed opportunity.
Atletico Madrid will make themselves hard to beat. That is not a stylistic choice. It is an identity. Simeone will set them up in two compact banks, hit Arsenal on the counter through Lookman and Giuliano Simeone, and trust Alvarez and Griezmann to punish any defensive mistake. Alvarez is the most dangerous player on this Atletico side — the man who became the quickest Argentine to 25 Champions League goals, doing it in 41 games, breaking a Lionel Messi record in the first leg. Griezmann provides the intelligence around him. If Atletico score first at the Emirates, Arteta's job becomes significantly more difficult. Barrios and Gimenez are both absent through injury which weakens their options, but the experience in this squad of navigating tense European nights is unmatched.
Predicted Lineups
Arsenal (4-3-3)
Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Hincapie; Rice, Zubimendi, Odegaard; Saka, Gyokeres, Eze
Atletico Madrid (4-4-2)
Oblak; Llorente, Pubill, Hancko, Ruggeri; Simeone, Koke, Cardoso, Lookman; Alvarez, Griezmann
Players to Watch
Bukayo Saka - The most important player in this Arsenal squad and the one who makes every other attacker around him better. He was withdrawn at halftime against Fulham purely to be fresh for Tuesday and when he is at full capacity at the Emirates, Arsenal are a completely different proposition. Atletico's left side will be tracking his every movement all night.
Viktor Gyokeres - Converted the penalty in Madrid and has now scored in four consecutive Champions League appearances. He gives Arsenal a physical presence that previous European striker options simply could not provide. Hancko and Pubill will find him considerably more difficult to handle than any striker they faced in the first leg.
Julian Alvarez - Broke a Lionel Messi record in the first leg and has been the most decisive player in Atletico's Champions League campaign all season. He works every blade of grass, closes down defenders, and finishes with the composure of someone who has been winning trophies his entire career. If Arsenal lose this tie, it will almost certainly be because of him.
Ademola Lookman - If fit, the most dangerous Atletico player on the counter attack. He burns past defenders with ease and has scored in big European games before. Arsenal's left back will need to manage him carefully throughout because one run from Lookman in the right moment changes everything.
Prediction
Arsenal to win: 1.69
Atletico Madrid to win: 5.47
Draw: 4.07
Over 2.5 Goals: 1.93
Prediction: Arsenal 2-1 Atletico Madrid (Arsenal advance 3-2 on aggregate)
The data pulls clearly towards Arsenal and the venue gives them the edge. They are unbeaten in thirteen Champions League games. They have won five of six at home. The Emirates on a European semi-final night with a twenty-year wait for a final behind every single supporter in that stadium will be one of the most extraordinary atmospheres in English football this decade. Saka is fit. Gyokeres is in form. And Atletico, for all their European pedigree, have won just two of their last twelve Champions League matches against English clubs. Arsenal will score early, the crowd will lift them, and Atletico's response will be brave but ultimately not enough. Arsenal go to Budapest. Twenty years of hurt ends on Tuesday night.
